Most reptiles and amphibians are ectotherms. This means that when the surrounding environment is cold, their body temperatures drop, and when the surrounding environment is warm, their body temperatures rise. You may see a lizard trying to warm itself up by lying out in the sun; this is because it cannot warm itself up on its own.
In contrast to ectotherms, endotherms, like humans and other mammals, can regulate their temperatures internally. Sweating, shivering, or panting are some ways that endotherms can maintain their temperatures in hot or cold environments.
