For much of United States history, women did not have the same rights as men. Once a woman married, in most states she lost control over her property. If she earned money, it belonged to her husband. A woman's status was largely determined by her husband's. For example, a woman often was only regarded highly if people thought well of her husband. Many people had to work hard to change the laws and attitudes toward women. Women got the right to vote in 1920, after more than seventy years of effort. Still, American women do not have complete equality. There are fewer women than men in Congress, and on average women make less money. Around the world, there is still work to do before women and men are treated equally.
