Storing Nuts

Norm the chipmunk has a lot to do. Winter is coming and he needs a spot to store his nuts.

Norm wants to ask for help from his bird pal. Larry the lark can carve new holes into the tree bark. Norm goes to Larry's nest. Oh no! Larry flew away for the winter.

Norm needs a new plan. He runs home through the fir trees. He stops and turns. In the dirt, he sees a dark fur mitten.

"A person must have lost it," he says.

Norm takes the mitten. It is a smart place to store nuts!

He went looking for nuts.

He is carving holes in a tree.

He flew away for the winter.

Chargers vs Sharks

The baseball game is about to start. The Sharks will play the Chargers!

The players must warm up. The pitchers take turns throwing the ball. They can hurl it so far! The batters do some big swings. The catchers grab their mitts.

Before the game can start, there is a boom of thunder!

"It is starting to get dark. It looks like it will storm," says Coach Martin. The storm forces the teams to stop warming up.

"The storm will be over soon," says Coach Martin. "And then we can play more baseball!"

"Hooray!" holler all of the players.

What do the pitchers do?

They take turns throwing the ball.

They grab their mitts.

They run in the grass.

When a vowel is followed by the letter r, the r sometimes changes the sound of the vowel. This is called r-control or bossy r.

In most words, er, ir, and ur make the same sound /er/. Because they make the same sound, you have to remember which vowel is in each word.
