Kurt and Fern

Fern sits at her desk. She will make some art. Fern starts to paint a farm. She paints a red barn and yellow corn. She paints a horse and a cart.

She stirs her brush in the jar of water. Now she will give her art to Kurt!

"Kurt! Look!" she yells. She comes in and Kurt turns around.

"Wow! More art for me?" Kurt says. Fern holds out her arms. Kurt looks at the art.

"I will put this over my desk!" he says.

Bert's Corn

Bert the Bird digs in the hard dirt. He is looking for some corn.

"Here is some corn!" Bert says. He puts it in his bag.

Bert digs for corn for a long time. It starts to get dark!

"Am I lost?" chirps Bert.

Bert looks down. He sees that some corn fell out of his bag! Then he turns. There is a line of corn over there.

Bert has a plan! "I can use the corn to find my way home!" Bert says.

What happens after Bert digs for a long time?

It gets dark.

He flies home.

He eats some of the corn.

When a vowel is followed by the letter r, the r sometimes changes the sound of the vowel. This is called r-control or bossy r.

In most one-syllable words, er, ir, and ur make the same sound. Because they make the same sound, you have to remember which vowel is in each word.
