Zoo Clues

When Lucy woke up, she saw a note on the table beside her bed. That's when she remembered that today was her birthday. She smiled and opened the note.

It was from Aunt Maddie, of course. But it didn't say "Happy Birthday." It said, "Look in your closet."

That was strange. Lucy went to the closet and opened it. Sitting on a shelf was a small stuffed lion. She picked it up and hugged it. This must be her present!

Then Lucy noticed a note tied around the lion's neck. This note said, "Go to the kitchen."

Lucy ran to the kitchen.

A big stuffed giraffe was sitting in her chair. Lucy laughed.

Someone else laughed, too. It was Aunt Maddie! "Happy Birthday, Lucy!" Aunt Maddie said. "Guess where we're going today!"

"The best place in the world!" Lucy said, jumping up and down.

"Yep," said Aunt Maddie.

After breakfast, Aunt Maddie and Lucy got in the car. Soon, they arrived at the best place in the world. The zoo!

A Good Book

Eddie woke before dawn and walked five miles into town. Today, Miss Grace was passing through with her pack horse library. Eddie wanted to get there before Frank Baker. But Frank must have had the same idea. They arrived in the town square at the same time.

The boys waited without speaking. By the time Miss Grace rode up on her horse, a large line had formed behind them.

Miss Grace set the books out on a table. Right away, Eddie saw one of the Secret Stairs books. That was the one he wanted! He loved those stories.

Eddie reached for the book, but so did Frank. "Oh no," Eddie thought. "Not again!" The boys stared at each other, neither one letting go of the book.

Miss Grace reached into her big pack and pulled out another book. It was the same as the one the boys were holding!

"You can both read this story," she said. "Then maybe you'll have something to talk about next time."

Eddie and Frank smiled and waved goodbye to Miss Grace. Then they both headed home, walking side by side. It was the boys' first journey together. But it wasn't their last.
