Stage 1
Answer 5 out of 7 questions correctly.
World War I began in Europe in 1914, with two main opposing sides: the Central powers, led by Germany, and the Allied powers, led by the United Kingdom and France. The United States initially remained neutral, but joined the Allied powers in April 1917.
Historians often refer to World War I as the first total
war,
which means that the countries involved devoted all of their resources to winning the war. These are some characteristics of a total war:- Both soldiers andcivilians,or non-soldiers, are involved in preparing troops, weapons, and other resources.
- Civilians become victims in attacks aimed at destroying the enemy's industrial capabilities.
- New laws are passed to increase government control over the economy and prevent criticism of the war.
- Each side uses weapons and strategies that aim for a total defeat of the enemy.
Some of the statements below describe characteristics of a society involved in total war. Some do not. Sort the statements.
Factories focus on producing consumer goods to ensure the country's economic prosperity is not impacted by the war.
Citizens are free to criticize government war policies without fear of arrest or censorship.
All eligible citizens are required to join the military or work in factories to support the war effort.
