The New England Colonies made up the northern part of the Thirteen Colonies in North America, which were ruled by England in the 1600s and 1700s. It included four separate colonies:
- Connecticut was a colony in the southwest corner of New England. It consisted of land on both sides of the Connecticut River and was located directly east of New York.
- Massachusetts consisted of two non-bordering territories. Both territories were located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains, but only the southern territory had land on both sides of the Connecticut River.
- New Hampshire was east of the Connecticut River and south of the Appalachian Mountains. It shared borders with Massachusetts and had a small southeastern border on the Atlantic Ocean.
- Rhode Island was the smallest colony in New England. It had a southern border on the Atlantic Ocean and was located east of Connecticut.
