The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between groups of states usually called the Union and the

Confederacy.

The war began due to deep divisions over the future of slavery, and it became the deadliest war in U.S. history.

The following maps show which states allowed slavery in 1860 and which states belonged to the Union or Confederacy in 1861. Look at the maps. Then follow the instructions below.

The Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, consisted of 11 states that seceded from, or left, the U.S. in 1861. After Abraham Lincoln was elected president on an antislavery platform, these states seceded in order to form their own country that would slavery. Their secession led to the Civil War.

The Confederacy fought against the Union, which consisted mostly of states that did not secede. Unlike all the Confederate states, most Union states slavery.

Four states—Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri— slavery but the Confederacy. They are called the border states. Keeping the border states in the Union was one of the most important Union war goals.
