Neil Armstrong in 1954

Neil Armstrong was born in 1930. When he was six, he rode in an airplane for the first time. He loved it! After this flight, he wanted to become a pilot. A pilot is a person who flies airplanes.

When Neil Armstrong was twenty-four years old, he got a job testing airplanes. He flew new planes and made sure they were safe. He tested more than 200 planes! Neil Armstrong became a great pilot.

Around the same time, people started to think about going to space. Space is everything outside Earth, where the Moon and stars are. No one had ever been to space before! People began making the first spaceships. These spaceships had to be very strong and very fast. But this made them dangerous. Some spaceships even caught on fire!

The United States needed people to test the new spaceships. But no one had ever flown a spaceship before! People thought it would be like flying a plane. Neil Armstrong was great at flying planes. He was not afraid to try flying spaceships. So, the United States asked him to become one of the first astronauts. An astronaut is a person who goes into space. Neil Armstrong was ready to help!
