John Deere was born long ago, in 1804. Back then, people did not have the machines that we have now, like computers and phones. But they did have metal tools, like hammers, nails, and shovels.

John Deere grew up in Vermont. When he was a young man, he became a blacksmith. A blacksmith makes tools out of metal. But there were already lots of blacksmiths where John Deere lived. So, it was hard for him to find work and make money.

John Deere moved to the Midwest to find work as a blacksmith. At that time, many farmers were moving there too. Farming in a new place was not easy. Farmers had to break up the dirt so their plants could grow. They used a tool called a plow to help. A plow has metal blades that push through the dirt. But the dirt in the Midwest was too sticky. The plows got stuck in the ground and broke. Then John Deere helped the farmers fix their plows.

How was life different when John Deere was born?

People could only get food by hunting animals, like deer.
