Harriet Tubman in the 1860s

Harriet Tubman was born in 1822. When she was young, Harriet was enslaved. An enslaved person is someone who is owned by someone else. Enslaved people are forced to do hard work. Back then, many Black people were enslaved. People being enslaved is also called slavery.

As a child, Harriet lived on a large farm. She had to work all day. She cooked and cleaned. She also did hard work outside. She farmed in fields and carried heavy logs.

Sometimes enslaved people were sold and taken away from their families. When she was young, three of Harriet's sisters were sold. They were taken far away. Harriet missed them. She did not want her family to be enslaved.

When Harriet Tubman was twenty-seven, she escaped. To escape means to run away from the people who enslaved her. She was in the South, where slavery was allowed. But the North did not allow slavery. So, one night, Harriet followed a bright star called the North Star. It helped her find her way to freedom in the North.
