Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday. During Hanukkah, Jewish people remember a story from long ago.

Many Jewish people lived in a place called Judea. But the ruler of Judea was a king who was not Jewish. This king made Jewish people pray to Greek gods. He also took over the Temple, a special place where Jewish people went to pray. A group of Jewish people called the Maccabees fought the king. The Maccabees won and took back the Temple from the king.

The Maccabees wanted to light a special candle in the Temple. The candle was never supposed to go out. It needed oil to burn. But there was only enough oil for one night. Then something special happened. The oil in the Temple lasted for eight days! That gave the Maccabees time to get more oil to keep the flame burning. People said it was a miracle. A miracle is an amazing thing that cannot be easily explained. Many people think that God makes miracles happen.
