Frederick Douglass after he ran away from slavery

Frederick Douglass was born around 1818. When he was growing up, the United States allowed slavery. Slavery means a person is owned by someone else and forced to work for them. Many Black people were enslaved. They had to work hard and did not get paid any money for their work.

Frederick was enslaved as a child. His life was hard. He lived on a farm in Maryland. Frederick had to work like an adult when he was young. He was often cold and hungry.

As a child, Frederick loved to learn. He wanted to know how to read and write. But enslaved people were not allowed to go to school. Frederick did not let that stop him from learning. Even though he had very little food, he gave some of it to white children so they would teach him. He also practiced with an old book. After Frederick learned to read and write, he taught other enslaved people, too.

When Frederick Douglass was 20, he ran away from the people who enslaved him. He went to New York City because slavery was not allowed there.
