Stage 1
Answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly.
Many people hoped World War I would be "the war to end all wars." But about twenty years later, problems that were unresolved after the war contributed to an even larger conflict: World War II. Read the passage. Then answer the question below.
In 1919, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States dictated the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. Germany had to accept full responsibility for the war, reduce its military, and pay reparations to the Allied nations.
Germany was not the only country frustrated by the Treaty of Versailles. Italy and Japan were also disappointed despite being on the winning side. Italy had hoped to gain territory. Japan gained control of several German colonies in Asia but did not get a "racial equality clause" included in the treaty. This fed Japanese mistrust of European nations.
In 1929, the Great Depression led to mass unemployment and poverty in countries around the world. This drove many countries to focus on their own economies instead of maintaining global peace. The United States, in particular, had been helping Germany but stopped when the economy collapsed. At the same time, Germany suffered high unemployment and could no longer make its reparations payments.
