People lived in the territory that eventually became the United States for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. These Native American peoples formed diverse societies and cultures. Some of these groups lived in the dry desert region of the Southwest. Before the 1400s, there were three major cultures in the Southwest. Read about these cultures. Then follow the directions below.
- The Mogollon culture developed in the southern part of present-day New Mexico and surrounding areas. It stretched from the Gila River to the Pecos River.
- The Ancestral Pueblo culture lived in the "Four Corners" region where the four present-day states of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico meet.
- The Hohokam culture developed around the Gila River in present-day Arizona.
