People in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving in the fall. It happens on the fourth Thursday in November. On Thanksgiving, people gather together for a special meal with family and friends. They give thanks for the good things in their lives.
The first Thanksgiving happened more than 400 years ago. It was celebrated by two groups of people who started out as strangers. These groups were the Wampanoag and the English settlers.
Long before the United States became a country, a Native American group called the Wampanoag was already living in North America. The Wampanoag lived on land that is now part of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. They built many towns where hundreds of people lived together. They fed themselves by farming and fishing.
Far away in England, a group of settlers sailed away on a ship. A settler is a person who moves to a new place to start a new community. In 1620, these settlers from England sailed across the ocean and landed close to where the Wampanoag lived. They built a new town there and called it Plymouth. Today, many people call these settlers the Pilgrims.
