The twelve animals of the Chinese calendar
Lunar New Year is a holiday that celebrates the beginning of a new year. People in Asia began celebrating it long ago. It is an important holiday in countries like China, Vietnam, and Korea.
Lunar means moon. Lunar New Year gets its name because it is based on a calendar that uses the moon. Most people use a calendar that uses only the sun to keep track of time. But the Chinese calendar uses both the sun and the moon. Since Lunar New Year follows a different calendar, its date changes a little every year. In some years, Lunar New Year is in January. In other years, it is in February.
In the Chinese calendar, each new year is given the name of an animal. The Chinese calendar has 12 animals, so the names start over every 12 years. Chinese calendars often show the 12 animals in a circle.
For the holiday, people hang signs on their doors and windows that say "Happy New Year!" Often, these signs have pictures of the year's animal on them. Many people keep these signs up all year, until the next Lunar New Year comes!
