A painting of George Washington when he was a young man
George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732. He had a large family with nine brothers and sisters. They lived in a big house with a lot of farmland. George Washington's family was wealthy, meaning that they had a lot of money. Most children during this time did not go to school because they had to work and help their families. Washington was able to go to school because his father could pay for it. He even had tutors, meaning teachers who came to his home.
When George Washington was eleven years old, his father died. His family had less money, and Washington could no longer go to school or have tutors. He didn't learn how to do things many other wealthy people could do, like play piano or speak French. Even though he could not go to school, he still wanted to learn. So, Washington read a lot of books. He was worried about not having good manners, so he read books about how to behave the correct way. He came up with 110 rules about good manners that he followed for his whole life.
George Washington did more than read books. He was a hard worker and a good leader. When he got older, he became a leader in the army. Later, he even became the first president of the United States of America.
