Bill Gates in the 1980s
Bill Gates was born in 1955 and grew up in Seattle, Washington. Gates was a curious child who liked to read books, learn math, and play sports. When he was 13 years old, he became interested in computers.
During Bill Gates's childhood, computers were very different. Computers did not have the internet or games like today. They were really big and could take up entire rooms. Those computers were too expensive for most people to buy. People did not have computers in their homes. Most schools did not have computers, but Gates's school did.
Bill Gates spent a lot of time on the computer learning about what it could do. He learned about hardware, meaning the parts of a computer that can be touched, like the screen and keyboard. He also learned about software, which means the directions that tell a computer what to do.
Bill Gates worked hard learning how to write software. He learned how to make computers do different tasks. One of his first projects was writing software so he could play tic- tac- toe on the computer. Gates wanted to make computers better. He started making software to help people use computers at home, school, and work. For example, when he was in high school, he wrote software for his school to make lists that decided which students were in each class.
