A photo of Abraham Lincoln before he became president
Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His family was poor. They lived in a log house with only one room. Lincoln's parents could not read or write. In 1816, his family moved to Indiana. Life was not easy. When Lincoln was only nine years old, his mother got sick and died.
In Indiana, Lincoln worked hard on the family's farm. As a child, Lincoln pushed the plow and planted seeds in the fields. He even cut logs with an ax. Working on the farm kept Lincoln very busy. He did not have much time to go to school. Still, he loved to read. He carried a book in his pocket while he worked. Sometimes, he walked a long way to borrow books from his neighbors.
As Lincoln grew, he learned many things through books. He learned about the law so he could help people. As a young man, he moved to Illinois and became a lawyer. A lawyer is someone who can help people when they disagree about the law. Lincoln was known for working hard and telling the truth. So, people began to call him "Honest Abe." Later, Lincoln helped make laws in government. Finally, in 1861, he became the 16th president of the United States.
