Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York in 1858. As a child, he was often sick. To get healthier, Roosevelt spent a lot of time playing sports and exercising. Since he was too sick to go to school, his teachers came to his house. Roosevelt loved to read about history and the outdoors.

When he was older, Theodore Roosevelt lived in North Dakota for several years. In North Dakota, he raised cattle and hunted a large animal called bison. He loved living close to nature. Nature means animals, plants, and other things in the world that are not made by people. Roosevelt wrote books about the beauty of nature in North Dakota.

In 1898, the United States went to war with Spain. Roosevelt led a group in the U.S. Army called the Rough Riders. Many people read about the fights Roosevelt and the Rough Riders were in. People celebrated Roosevelt as a hero.

After the war, Roosevelt became a governor in New York state. Later, Roosevelt became vice president of the United States. In 1901, the president died, and Roosevelt became president. He was the youngest person ever to become president of the United States!
