Around 1831, Sitting Bull was born in present-day South Dakota. He was part of a Native American group called the Lakota. Native American people were the first to live in North America.

Like other Lakota, Sitting Bull grew up traveling across the open grassland. The Lakota rode horses from place to place. They traveled to hunt bison. Bison are big animals with horns and four legs. The Lakota lived in cone-shaped tents called tipis. Tipis were made of logs and animal skin. Tipis were quick to set up and take down.

Sitting Bull and other Lakota used horses to move tipis, hunt, and fight. Even at ten years old, Sitting Bull was an excellent bison hunter and horse rider! He could even ride a horse while fighting. Sitting Bull fought so the Lakota could get more land for hunting.

Sitting Bull helped his people hunt and kept them safe from danger. The Lakota respected Sitting Bull as a strong, brave, and wise protector. So, they made him their chief. A chief is a leader of a group. As chief, Sitting Bull guided the Lakota through hard times.
