Paul Revere was born in Boston in 1735. As a young man, he became a silversmith. A silversmith is someone who makes things out of silver, like teapots, spoons, and rings. Revere was one of the best silversmiths in Boston.

At that time, Boston was part of the Thirteen Colonies. The Thirteen Colonies belonged to a country called Great Britain. Many people did not like that Great Britain had control of the colonies.

Great Britain sent soldiers to Boston to make people follow their rules. Paul Revere and many other people did not like having the British soldiers in Boston. Sometimes there were fights between the soldiers and the people in Boston. One evening, another fight started. Some people say the townspeople started the fight by yelling and throwing things at soldiers. Other people disagree. No matter how it began, the fight ended with British soldiers killing five people.

Revere was angry that British soldiers had killed people in his town. He wanted other people to know about it. So, he made a picture of the event that showed British soldiers hurting people. Many people saw copies of this picture and got angry at Great Britain.

People in the Thirteen Colonies were also angry that Great Britain made them pay extra money for things like tea. One day, Revere and other people from Boston snuck onto a British ship that was filled with boxes of tea. They threw the tea into the ocean! Today, people call this event the Boston Tea Party.
