George Washington Carver as a teacher

George Washington Carver was born in Missouri in the 1860s. Back then, many places were segregated. Segregated means that Black people were kept apart from white people. Black people were not allowed to use the same parks, libraries, or schools as white people.

As a child, George Washington Carver loved to learn and wanted to go to school. But schools in his town did not allow Black children. So Carver found ways to learn at home. He liked studying the plants and flowers in the woods near his farm. Carver also helped his neighbors, who were mostly poor farmers, care for their gardens. He was so good at gardening that people called him "the plant doctor." When Carver was around 11, he went to a school for Black children. It was far from his home, so Carver had to move away to go to that school.

When George Washington Carver got older, he wanted to keep learning about plants. The first college he tried to go to did not let him in because he was Black. A few years later, Carver became the first Black student at Iowa State College. He studied farming. Then he got a job teaching farming at a college for Black students. Carver taught for 47 years. He wanted to be a teacher to help poor farmers like the ones he grew up around.
