Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1706. He grew up in a large family with sixteen brothers and sisters. Though he only went to school for two years, he loved to read about many different things.

When Benjamin Franklin was twelve, he began working in a print shop owned by his older brother. A print shop makes things like books and newspapers. Together, the Franklin brothers printed a newspaper.

But when he was seventeen, Franklin got into a fight with his brother. He ran away to the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There, Franklin started his own print shop. He also made his own newspaper and a book called Poor Richard's Almanack. This book predicted the weather. It also had lots of advice like "Time is money." This means that people should not waste time.

Franklin did many things to help Philadelphia. He created the city's first fire department. He opened the city's first library and started a school. Franklin was also in charge of Philadelphia's mail. He helped people send letters.

Franklin never stopped learning. He used things he learned to make inventions. Inventions are new things that people can use. He invented a new kind of glasses that helped people see both nearby and far away. He also figured out that lightning is made of electricity. He used this information to invent the lightning rod. A lightning rod is a metal stick on a roof. The lightning hits the metal rod instead of hitting the house. Benjamin Franklin's inventions helped many people.
