Thurgood Marshall as a lawyer for the NAACP

Thurgood Marshall was born in 1908. Back then, many places were segregated. Segregated means that Black people were kept apart from white people. Thurgood was Black. He was not allowed to go to the same school as white children. The schools for Black children were older and smaller than the schools for white children. They also had fewer books. Thurgood knew that this was not fair.

As a child, Thurgood spent time with his dad listening to lawyers talk in courtrooms. A lawyer is someone who understands the law. They can use the law to help people. Thurgood wanted to be a lawyer. He decided to go to law school. But most law schools did not allow Black students. So, Thurgood Marshall went to Howard University. It had a great law school for Black students.

Once Thurgood Marshall was a lawyer, he worked with a group called the NAACP. Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP helped Black people in court when they were being treated unfairly.
