People in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving in the fall. It happens on a Thursday in November. On Thanksgiving, people give thanks for all the good things in their lives.

The first Thanksgiving happened long ago. There were two groups of people who started out as strangers. Long before the United States became a country, Native American groups were already there. They had been there for many years. One of these groups is called the Wampanoag. The Wampanoag fed themselves by farming and fishing. They built many towns where hundreds of people lived together.

Far away in England, a group of settlers sailed away on a ship. A settler is a person who moves to a new place to start a new community. These settlers from England sailed across the ocean and landed close to where the Wampanoag lived. They built a new town there and called it Plymouth. Today, many people remember these settlers and call them the Pilgrims.
