Sitting Bull was born around 1831. He was part of the Lakota Nation. The Lakota Nation is a Native American group. Native Americans were the first people to live in North America.

Like other Lakota, Sitting Bull grew up in the open grassland. The Lakota did not live in one place. They traveled on horses. They moved around to hunt bison. Bison are big, hairy animals with horns. Since the Lakota were always moving, they lived in tents. Their tents were called tipis. Tipis were made of logs and animal skin. Tipis were quick to set up and take down.

Sitting Bull helped his people when he was a child. He became a bison hunter when he was only ten years old. Later on, Sitting Bull fought so the Lakota could get more land for hunting.

Sitting Bull was a great fighter who protected his people. So, the Lakota made him one of their leaders. When there were big problems, Sitting Bull decided what to do.
