Memorial Day is a holiday in America. It happens on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day is about celebrating American soldiers. These soldiers help to keep the United States safe. But sometimes, soldiers die protecting our country. Memorial Day is a time to remember the soldiers who died.

The United States did not always celebrate Memorial Day. The holiday began more than 150 years ago. It started after the Civil War. In this war, Americans fought against each other. Many soldiers died. After the war, people wanted a way to honor the dead soldiers. Honoring the soldiers means remembering them and showing respect for them.

After the Civil War, Americans picked a day in May. They spent it honoring soldiers who died in the Civil War. Later, Americans kept celebrating the holiday to honor soldiers who died in other wars. Today, we call this holiday "Memorial Day."
