Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Georgia. He is also known as Dr. King. He lived at a time when many places were segregated. Segregation means that Black people were kept apart from white people. Black people could not use the same schools, parks, and libraries as white people.

As a child, Martin spent a lot of time in church with his family. His father was a church leader. Martin liked to sing in church, play sports, and read. He read many books about Black leaders.

When he grew up, Dr. King became a church leader like his father. He shared his ideas with people in his church. He told them that everyone should be treated fairly. He said it was wrong to keep Black people separate from white people.

Dr. King wanted things to change. So, he joined the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was a group of Black and white people working together to end segregation. They thought that everyone should be treated fairly.
