Kwanzaa is a holiday about African American history. It is a time for African American people to think about their communities and their ancestors. Ancestors are family members who lived long ago.

In the past, many African people were taken to the United States as enslaved people. Enslaved means being owned by someone else and forced to work. Family members could even be sold and taken away from each other.

It was hard for enslaved people to spend holidays together. They were not allowed to celebrate the way they did in Africa. Many of their traditions were lost. Traditions are special things people have done for many years.

Today, some African American families celebrate Kwanzaa. They take time to think about their ancestors and traditions. It is a time when many families remember their past.
