George Washington Carver as a teacher

George Washington Carver was born in Missouri in the 1860s. As a child, he loved to learn about the plants and flowers in the woods near his home. George was so good at growing plants that people called him "the plant doctor."

Growing up, George wanted to go to school. But Black children could not go to the school in his town. George lived at a time when many places were segregated. Segregated means Black people were kept apart from white people. Black people could not go to the same libraries, parks, or schools as white people. George had to go far from his home so he could go to a school for Black children.

When George Washington Carver got older, he went to college. He learned more about how plants grow and how to take care of them. After college, he got a job teaching people better ways to grow plants.
