What are factors?

Factors are numbers you multiply together to get another number.

For example, what are the factors of the number 8? Think about all of the whole numbers you can multiply to get 8.

So, the factors of 8 are

and

A factor of a number divides the number evenly, with no remainder.

Identify factors

How do you find all the factors of a number?

You can use factor pairs to help! Let’s try finding all the factors of 24 to see how.

Start with 1. You can multiply

to get 24. So, 1 and 24 are both factors of 24. They make a factor pair.

Put 1 at the beginning of the factor list and 24 at the end.

Next, try 2. You can multiply

to get 24.

Put 2 and 12 on the list.

Then, try 3.

Put 3 and 8 on the list.

Now, try 4.

Put 4 and 6 on the list.

Now, look at 5. The number 24 can’t be divided by 5.

That brings us to 6, which is already on the list. So, our list is complete.

The factors of 24 are:

Every positive whole number has at least 2 factors, 1 and the number itself. If these are the only two factors, the number is a

prime number

. If there are more than 2 factors, the number is a composite number.
