A group of 14 travelers needs to take taxi cabs across the city. If each taxi cab holds 4 people, how many cabs will the group need?

Divide the number of travelers by the number in each taxi cab.

Now think about the remainder. The answer is either 3 or 4.

Multiply:

4 × 3 = 12

4 × 4 = 16

3 taxi cabs (12 travelers) is not enough. 4 taxi cabs (16 travelers) is correct. The group will need 4 cabs.
