When you read, you might know some words just by looking at them, or by sight. The more words you know by sight, the faster you can read.

High-frequency words are words we see a lot in books. It helps to learn these words by sight.

To learn words by sight, look at the letters in the word and try to sound them out. Many common words follow regular spelling patterns. Sound out each part and blend the sounds together.

Some words have irregular patterns or patterns you haven't learned yet. Practicing these words can help you learn new spelling patterns.

For example, look at this word:

could

In this word, you may already know that the c makes the /k/ sound and the d makes the /d/ sound. But you may not know what sound oul makes.

could

You can learn that oul makes the /oo/ sound in this word. When you blend these sounds together, you get the word could.

The more you practice, the more words you will know without sounding them out.
