For years, I've joined with local soccer players in calling for a soccer dome to be built in our city. To me, it's a no-brainer; we live in a state where winter can last six months. As one athlete stated at the recent city council meeting, our teams deserve safe, high-quality fields to play on, all year round.

However, now that the council has voted to go ahead with the project, I find myself at odds with my former soccer-playing allies. They want the dome to be built behind the recreation center, replacing the outdoor fields where community teams currently play. That plan is a bad idea; with the sport's growing popularity, our city should be increasing the number of soccer fields available to players. Besides that, when weather permits, it's healthier (and less expensive) for athletes to play on outdoor fields. I believe we should retain the outdoor fields and find an alternate location for the dome.

Alice Gothix's spine-tingling novel, From Here to Haunted, is my favorite horror book, so I was thrilled when I learned that it had been adapted for the stage. I bought tickets soon after the play opened, even though the famed theater critic Dee Rahmah had given the show a negative review. I was eager to see Gothix's sinister underworld creatures brought to life despite Rahmah's assessment that "Gothix's horrific creatures—blunches, woutchers, and changelings—seemed exaggerated and even ridiculous. They were anything but frightening."

On that score, I completely disagree with Rahmah. Gothix's creatures were brilliantly cast and terrifyingly delightful; when they crept down the aisles, I wanted to run out of the theater! Sadly, though, like Rahmah, I have to give the performance an overall thumbs-down. The huge amount of fog on the stage in most of the scenes obscured my vision, and deafening sound effects kept me from fully enjoying the show.
