In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Antonio Stradivari crafted his world-famous Stradivarius violins, violas, and cellos in the town of Cremona, Italy. Although many of these instruments are still in existence, they have weakened and warped over hundreds of years. Eventually, they will become too delicate to play. To help preserve the unique sounds of Stradivari's creations for future generations, four musicians in Cremona set out to develop the Stradivarius Sound Bank in 2019. Cremona was once home to several skilled instrument makers, whose works are mainly kept in museums. Over the course of a month, the musicians recorded every note, scale, and chord that their classic instruments could produce. The one million audio files from this project will help ensure that Stradivari's creations never truly go silent.
