Businessman John Paul DeJoria is known for becoming a self- made billionaire, but his road to success was not a smooth one. He would eventually co- found one of the most iconic brands of the 1980s and shift the way consumers think about beauty products and corporate responsibility. But first, he needed to find his way in business. DeJoria, who grew up in poverty, learned his earliest lessons about business success as a child. At the age of nine, in an effort to help support his family, he sold Christmas cards and newspapers. Poverty forced DeJoria and his brother into foster care for part of his childhood, but DeJoria remained optimistic and looked for ways to change his situation for the better.
In an effort to pay for college, DeJoria sold encyclopedias door- to- door. He later said that this job provided him valuable experience with rejection. It was during this time that he learned to stay positive and keep trying when people told him, "No." DeJoria carried these lessons of perseverance and zeal into his future business endeavors, helping him to eventually find success.
In 1980, DeJoria teamed up with his friend Paul Mitchell, a hair stylist who made his own hair care products. DeJoria saw how much customers valued Mitchell's products, so DeJoria suggested they build a company together. DeJoria, who had already spent several years working in management and sales for large hair care brands, felt confident that his skills, combined with Mitchell's products, could make a large impact on the industry. The two friends pooled their resources, and DeJoria borrowed some money from his mother. The result was $700— enough to buy supplies and start their business.
The friends' company, John Paul Mitchell Systems, sold Paul Mitchell products to professionals working at hair salons. DeJoria used his sales skills to go from salon to salon, convincing hair care experts to use Paul Mitchell products on their customers' hair. People quickly fell in love with the products, and after a few years, the company was making millions of dollars annually.
From the beginning, DeJoria and Mitchell wanted their company to reflect their values. They never tested their salon products on animals because they perceived animal testing as a cruel practice. John Paul Mitchell Systems was the first beauty care company to take a public stand against the practice of animal testing, paving the way for other brands to seek out more ethical alternatives. In addition, as John Paul Mitchell Systems grew, DeJoria and Mitchell made a commitment to use recycled materials in their product packaging. Not only did this have economic benefits, but this decision cemented the company's reputation as an industry leader in environmental awareness.
After many years of hard work leading John Paul Mitchell Systems and managing other companies he owned, DeJoria became very wealthy. Still grounded by the same commitment to progress and optimism that helped launch him into business, DeJoria became a notable philanthropist. He began giving money to environmental organizations and other causes that were close to his heart. In 2011, DeJoria signed "The Giving Pledge," promising to give away at least half his money to charitable causes. In the years since then, DeJoria has donated many millions of dollars, giving rise to his personal motto, "Success unshared is failure."
