Cotton Candy Grapes

Until fairly recently, most American supermarkets only sold grapes belonging to a species called Vitis vinifera. This species of grape has a crunchy, firm skin that comes in several different colors. However, Vitis vinifera is not the only species of grape you can eat. In fact, the world is full of different grapes with many wonderful flavors. Unfortunately, some of the world's most flavorful grapes are mushy and have wrinkly, loose skins. Supermarkets usually avoid selling these loose-skinned grapes. Plant scientist David Cain thought shoppers should have more types of grapes to choose from. So he and his team of scientists began working to develop grapes that have both firm skins and interesting flavors.
Cain and his team began blending different kinds of grape plants together. This is called hybridizing. It can take many years to hybridize a plant with exactly the right qualities, like fast-growing leaves or colorful flowers. Over twelve years, Cain's team planted about ten thousand grape plants in their search for the perfect grape. Each time a plant produced fruit, the scientists chewed up a grape and spit it out. Then they wrote some notes about the flavor and texture. Eventually, they blended a flavorful, loose-skinned grape with the firm-skinned grape usually sold in supermarkets. The result? A strong, crunchy grape that tastes like fluffy pink cotton candy. They called their creation the Cotton Candy grape.
Some people may worry that grapes named after a circus treat must be unhealthy. The truth is that while Cotton Candy grapes are sweeter than regular grapes, they are still grapes. One serving of Cotton Candy grapes has about fourteen grams of sugar. However, a serving of actual cotton candy can have up to four times that much. Cotton Candy grapes also contain nutrients like fiber and vitamin A.
Cotton Candy grapes are more expensive than the grapes commonly found in supermarkets, but this has not stopped people from buying them. Just a few years after their creation, the grapes were being sold in fourteen different countries. After the success of the Cotton Candy grape, Cain and his team continued blending plants to create new treats. They eventually concocted grapes that taste like strawberries and gumdrops. Who knows? Maybe someday scientists will even create grapes that taste like pizza or ice cream!
