Dinner with Carmen
Max loved spending time with his best friend, Carmen. They played video games after school and shared everything with each other. One Friday, Carmen invited Max over for dinner at her house.
"You'll love it! My grandma is making paella, and she's the best cook!"
Max was excited, but he was also a little bit worried. He had never heard of paella. Max usually stuck to his favorite foods. It had taken days for his sister to get him to even try ice cream!
He imagined paella might be full of slimy vegetables or spicy sauces that would make his mouth burn. What if it's awful? Max wondered. What if Carmen's family is upset? What if Carmen stops being my friend?
That evening, as Max walked to Carmen's house, he tried to think of a polite way to say, "No, thank you."
But when he arrived, Carmen's parents gave him a warm hug, and the house smelled delicious. The table was set with a big, steaming dish in the center. Inside was golden-brown rice with bits of chicken and colorful vegetables.
"My grandma's famous paella from Spain!" Carmen said proudly as everyone sat at the table. "She only makes it for special guests."
Max's heart beat wildly in his chest. The food looked different from anything he'd eaten before. He gulped nervously, and thought about how much Carmen's friendship meant to him. Max didn't want to hurt Carmen's feelings or seem rude.
The moment of truth had come. Max picked up his fork. He looked at Carmen, who was smiling. Then, he looked at the paella, which suddenly didn't seem so scary. I can do this, Max thought. If I try one bite, I can show Carmen I care about being her friend.
With all the courage he could find, Max took a bite. He chewed the fluffy rice, the juicy chicken, and the sweet peppers.
To his surprise, it was delicious.
"Wow!" Max said, his eyes wide. "This is amazing!"
He took another bite, then another, and soon his plate was empty. Carmen laughed. "I told you my grandma was the best cook!"
