Carla felt like hundreds of butterflies were fluttering around in her stomach. It was the last day of Space Camp and time to try the Spaceship 3000—a machine that made you feel like you were in space. Carla could spend all day reading about space. However, the thought of going to space, even if it was pretend, made her palms sweat.

Carla was about to turn around when a camp counselor handed her a helmet. "You're going to love it," said the counselor, with a big comforting smile. Carla nodded nervously. It was too late to leave now. She hesitated for a moment before getting into the machine.

The machine was dark and empty. Carla couldn't hear anything except the sound of her heart. When she looked out the spaceship's windows, it looked like she was moving through space. She noticed the sparkling outline of the Milky Way. Then she spotted a planet orbiting in the distance. Carla rubbed her eyes in amazement. The machine's images looked so real! Suddenly all of her fears disappeared. Carla remembered how much she loved space.

Gentle waves splashed against Clara's toes as she walked along the rocky shore of Lake Champlain. It was the perfect day for collecting beach glass. Clara searched all over for the smooth glass pieces.

Years ago, Clara's grandmother had shown her how the lake waves tumbled pieces of broken glass, smoothing out the sharp edges to make round, colored stones. It seemed like magic to her—that a body of water could turn trash like broken bottles and jars into beautiful treasures.

Every year since, Clara had gone hunting for beach glass. Her eyes were trained to notice flashes of green, brown, blue, and white mixed with the dark, flat rocks of the lakeshore.

Clara saw a piece of blue glass poking out from the sand. She dug it up and held it in the palm of her hand. Careful not to drop it, she gently ran her finger over it. Clara had a special plan for this piece of glass. She was going to wrap it in silver wire and make a necklace for her grandmother. Clara knew her grandmother would love it.

When you write a story, you should try to create scenes that are easy for the reader to picture. You can do this by adding imagery, or descriptive details that help the reader imagine exactly what is happening in the story.

Here are some examples of ways you can revise your writing to include more imagery:

Add details. Details can help the reader picture what is happening in the story.

Joshua and Kyle were having a picnic in the middle of a grassy field.

Use strong verbs. Strong verbs can add extra information and make your writing more interesting.

Raj screeched when his sister jumped out of the closet wearing a monster mask.

Add sensory details. Sensory details can help the reader imagine a sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch more clearly.

Louisa hugged the snow-white baby goat in her lap, feeling his soft, fluffy fur in her hands.

Show, don't tell. You can bring your characters to life when you use actions and dialogue to show what characters are like and how they feel, rather than just telling about them.

"I can't believe it!" roared Calvin, his face dark red. He stormed out and slammed the door behind him.
