Suffixes are word parts like

-ed,

-ing,

-er,

or -est that you add to the end of words. Usually, they can be added directly, but some short vowel words follow special rules.

For short vowel words that end in a single consonant, the final consonant is usually doubled before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel.

hop → hopped

stop → stopping

fat → fatter

big → biggest

If the word ends in more than one consonant, simply add the suffix.
