Suffixes are word parts like

-er,

-est,

-es,

or -ed that you add to the end of words. Usually, they can be added directly, but some words that end in y follow special rules.

When adding a suffix to a word that ends in y, check the letter right before the y. If it is a consonant, change the y to i before adding the suffix.

silly → sillier

happy → happiest

fly → flies

cry → cried

If the letter before the y is not a consonant, just add the suffix directly.

play → played

If the suffix is
