The first English colony in America was formed in 1585. Sir Walter Raleigh brought a group of people to the coast of what is now North Carolina. Later, Raleigh wrote a book about Greece and Rome. The place where Raleigh's group stayed was called the Roanoke Island colony. The colony did not last, however, and the people disappeared.

When you write a paragraph, you can begin it with a topic sentence. A topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph is about.

Topic sentence: Sharks have many teeth.

Each sentence after the topic sentence should give more detail to support the topic sentence.

If a sentence does not support the topic sentence, take it out of the paragraph.
