When you read a word with many syllables, it can help to divide the word up into syllables. To find out where the syllable breaks are, first, find the vowels. Then, think about each syllable type.

Words with more than one syllable have both stressed and unstressed syllables. A stressed syllable is often said slightly louder, longer, or at a higher pitch than the unstressed syllables. In unstressed syllables, the vowel sound is often the schwa sound. The schwa sound is like a soft short u, /ŭ/, or short i, /ĭ/, sound.

For example, in the word daffodil, the second syllable fo is unstressed. So, instead of saying the long o sound, it is usually pronounced with a schwa sound.
