Roger Bannister was the first person to run the mile in less than four minutes. As a student studying medicine, Bannister wanted to enter races. The problem was that he didn't have much free time. His solution was to train very hard for just thirty minutes on most evenings. He trained so hard his body got tired. To help his body heal, he started taking some days off. This special training helped Bannister run a mile at a record time of 3:59.4 on May 6, 1954.
