closed	A closed syllable has one vowel letter followed by at least one consonant. The vowel sound is short.	cup
open	An open syllable ends with one vowel letter. If the syllable is stressed, the vowel sound is usually long. Remember that y is sometimes a vowel. If the syllable is unstressed, the vowel sound is often the schwa sound. The schwa sound is like a soft short u, /ŭ/, or short i, /ĭ/, sound.	she, sky sofa In sofa, the first syllable is stressed and makes the long o sound /ō/. The second syllable is unstressed. So, the a makes the schwa sound /ǔ/.
silent e	A silent e syllable has a vowel letter followed by a consonant letter and a silent e. The vowel sound is long.	lake
vowel digraph	When two or more vowels work together to make one sound, they may be called a vowel team. A vowel digraph is a vowel team where two vowel letters come together to make one sound. Some vowel digraphs like ai, ay, ea, ee, ie, oa, and ue can make a long vowel sound. Some vowel digraphs like oi, oy, ou, and ow can make a diphthong sound. You can feel your mouth move when you say a diphthong. In ow and oy words, the letters w and y act like vowels.	noon mail coin
r-controlled	An r-controlled syllable has a vowel followed by the letter r. The r changes the sound of the vowel.	fern
