Suffixes are word parts like

-ed,

-ing,

-er,

or -est that you add to the end of words. Usually, they can be added directly without making any changes to the base word.

yell → yelling

add → added

clean → cleaner

deep → deepest

play → played

slow → slower

Silent e words have special rules.

When adding a suffix that starts with a vowel, drop the silent e before adding the suffix.

hope → hoped

bake → baking

safe → safer

nice → nicest

Words that end in y have special rules.

When adding a suffix to a word that ends in y, check the letter right before the y. If it is a consonant, change the y to i before adding the suffix.

silly → sillier

happy → happiest

fly → flies

cry → cried

If the letter before the y is not a consonant, just add the suffix directly.

play → played

If the suffix is

-ing,

just add the suffix directly.

cry → crying

play → playing

Short vowel words that end in a single consonant have special rules.

For short vowel words that end in a single consonant, the final consonant is usually doubled before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel.

hop → hopped

stop → stopping

fat → fatter

big → biggest

If the word ends in more than one consonant, simply add the suffix.
