Vending machines offer a way to purchase things when you are not near a store. You can buy headphones, school supplies, and even pizza from vending machines. But that was not always the case.

The first vending machines just sold chewing gum, candy, and peanuts. People put a penny in the machine and pulled a lever. Pulling this long bar caused a door on the machine to open. The treat fell out of the door and into the person's hand.

Some people learned they could trick the machine, though. The machine would still give them a treat if they put in a fake coin. Laws were passed to stop people from doing this. New vending machines were also made. These new machines would not take fake coins.

Now, people push a button on a vending machine to choose what they want. Computers count the money and work the motors that push out the snacks. And this all happens in seconds, so you can quickly grab a snack or cold drink!
