Grasshopper's Doll

Grasshopper has a new doll. He hops with joy!

"I will take you everywhere," Grasshopper tells the doll. But it is hard for Grasshopper to hold the doll when he hops.

Grasshopper thinks, "I can tie the doll on my back with this ribbon." But the ribbon is too short and the doll falls down.

Grasshopper looks around his home. "I can put the doll in this bag. I can put the bag on my back," he says.

Hop, hop! The doll stays in the bag! Now Grasshopper can take his doll everywhere.

The Drum

It is time for the parade. Gus will march with the firemen. He puts on his hard red hat. He grabs his red coat. But where is his drum?

The parade starts, and Gus has to go. He thinks. "Oh! I know!" says Gus.

He takes the hard red hat off his head. He hits it with his hand. Boom!

"This can be my drum," he says. The firemen smile and start to march. Gus marches, too.

Stories are made up of many different parts. Some important parts are the problem, solution, and plot.

The problem is something that goes wrong for the characters, or something that needs to be fixed.

The solution is how the characters deal with the problem. Sometimes they can fix the problem. Other times, they may deal with the problem in a different way.

The plot is what happens in a story. It tells us what happens, or the events, from the beginning to the end. You can put the events in order using words like first, next, and last.

Identifying the problem, solution, and plot helps you better understand the story.
